The American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus), often simply known as the bullfrog in Canada and the United States, is a large true frog native to eastern North America. The frog's typical habitat is large permanent water bodies such as swamps, ponds, and lakes, but can also take up residence in swimming pools, koi ponds, canals, ditches and culverts. The bullfrog's name derives from the bellowing sound that males produce during the mating season.
